History of Doron Brothers

The children of Joseph and Ellen Doron (Parents)

Joseph and Ellen had four children while they lived at 329 North C Street. Their first child was born nine months after they married. The children, in sequence were:

Shuler William, son, born March 7, 1890
Mary Ann, daughter, born December 29, 1892
Joseph W. Jr., son, born August 10, 1895
John Lawrence, son, born November 3, 1900 (13 nov 1900)

Their only daughter, Mary Ann, died July 26, 1893 when she was less than 1-year old.

Shuler William graduated from Purdue University class of 1916 and Joseph Jr. was educated in Hamilton and Andover Mass. Some information suggests that Joseph Jr. attended the Masssechusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

Joseph Jr. and Shuler William both served in the U.S. Army during World War I.

Joseph Jr. enlisted on September 19, 1917 at 22 years old served one year in the Radio Division, Company A, 308th Field Signal Engineers Battalion, 83rd Division as a private stationed at Camp Sherman after which he was discharged on April 18, 1918 to attend Officers' Training Camp, at Leon Springs, Texas where he received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Signal Corps and sent to Little Silver, NJ. Next, he was transferred to Camp Hancock, Augusta, Ga., where he was made Camp Signal Supply Officer. He was promoted to first lieutenant on the 19th of June, 1919,
he was honorably discharged April 14, 1919.

Shuler William enlisted on April 2, 1918 (November 17, 1917?) in the A.C. Radio Service approximately six months after his brother Joseph and he was discharged October 1, 1918 to also accept a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Signal Corps. As an officer he was Senior Instructor of Air Service in radio work. He was honorably discharged December 3, 1919 (dec 10, 1918?).

(In 1917 the military draft required men aged 21 to 30 years old to register. Younger brother John Lawrence was 17 years old in 1917 and still a student and therefore he was not required to register. In 1918 the draft required age was broadened to 18-45 years old but John Lawrence was a 18-year old senior in High School during 1918.)

Amateur Radio History:

Doron Brothers Amateur Radio Station - Special Land Station 8ZU

1912-1913

On December 13, 1912 the “Act to Regulate Radio Communication” was passed by Congress. The law allowed “Special Land Stations” to be operated and licensed for radio transmissions. At that in time in history the Radio Service of the Bureau of Navigation of the Department of Commerce controlled, regulated, and administered radio communication in the United States.

The Dorons immediately applied for a license. By July 1, 1913 only 22 “Special Land Stations” were listed on the U.S. Special Land Stations registration list along with the Doron’s station.

Under the new law “Experimental Radio Station” licensees received call-signs with an "X" while “Technical and Training School Radio Station” licensees received "Y" call-signs and “Special Amateur Radio Station” licensees received "Z" call-signs. The Doron Brothers Electrical Company amateur station call letters were “8ZU” indicating a “Special Amateur Station” license.

1916 amateur radio relay message

On February 22, 1916 the Doron’s amateur radio station 8ZU was one of twenty-seven amateur stations that participated in a Washington’s birthday radio message relay across the United States.

A written message from Colonel Nicholson of the Rock Island Arsenal was hand delivered to amateur station 9XE where the message was relayed via radio transmission east and west and north and south with the Doron Brother’s 8ZU amateur radio station about midpoint in the relay.

As the message was received by the various amateur stations it was then hand delivered to 37 Governors, 137 heads of cities (Mayors, Town Commissioners, etc.) and the President of the United States. The 1916 message stated the following:

"Q.S.T. Amateur Relay. A democracy requires that a people who govern and educate themselves should be so armed and disciplined that they can protect themselves.
(Signed) Colonel Nicholson, U.S.A."

Broadcast History(brief)

1923-1926

WRK’s general schedule was:

8.30 to 10:30 P.M. daily, music
Monday, 10.30, health lecture.
Wednesday 8.30, music, lectures and vaudeville.
Saturdays 8.30, music, health and radio lectures.
Alternate Sundays, church services.

During 1926 WRK operated on 1110 kHz which was one of a few additional frequencies the government allowed.

1927-1930

After the Doron Brothers Electrical Co. was dissolved Shuler continued operating the station with a new partner John C. Slade as the “Hamilton Radio Service”. The “Hamilton Radio Service transmitted on 1460 kHz during 1927 and 1928 and then on 1310 kHz until September 29, 1930 when it seems WRK went off the air permanently.

Unfortunately station WRK did not survive into the golden age of radio. The Doron’s radio manufacturing business; see part two; also did not survive into the 1930’s.

Another local radio and broadcast pioneer was Harry Fahrlander who operated a broadcast station in the Hamilton area. The call was WSRO and he also was a local radio dealer. His store offered "state of the art" sets, batteries, and accessories. He organized big name national entertainment to broadcast live from this area and was a guest operator for the famous "nations station WLW".

A very special thank you to the following for help, information, guidance, and support. Some were guest operators at W8H / WRK also.(*)
